The phyphox app is a powerful tool that science teachers may want to consider incorporating into their teaching practice. The phyphox app has the potential to promote STEM learning through inquiry and can be used at multiple different grade levels and across the BC curriculum.
Phyphox is a free app, which can be installed on Android and Apple devices including phone and tablets, making it more easily accessible than other technologies that may require specific hardware or expensive software. Phyphox uses the sensors already built into each hand held device to measure and record a multitude of different types of data, including acceleration, rotation, luminosity, location, magnetic fields data, barometric pressure, and more.
The app's straightforward interface and quick links to informative Wiki pages make it easy for a novice to get started. However, phyphox also allows students to design their own experiments and collect/analyze their own data easily. Students can also easily export their data to a laptop or desktop computer in a variety of formats or even control their phone's experiments remotely from another device, allowing for more in-depth analysis.
Phyphox promotes open lab investigations both inside science classrooms and out. It allows students to create their own experiments through open inquiry, easily analyze the results of their experiments, and is applicable in a variety of different science settings.
